Today, you had the opportunity to express yourself through poetry. Reflect on your creative writing process. What did you find most enjoyable or challenging about turning your thoughts into a poem?   my favorite thing ever :) Prompt   Response My job is to write poetry on the daily; but the thing is, no matter which medium of art I'm working with, I've always believed that taking your time is so important. The time crunch was the hardest part for me, but I think I made a really creative work despite the struggle it was to draft and finalize the poem. I kind of just followed my regular writing process, but forcing the inspiration part to manifest by reading some of my other works, which somehow miraculously worked even though my brain wasn't functioning for the first 5 minutes. Once I did get that spark of inspiration, I started to jot down ideas I've previously written and developed on them by adding lines that might proceed after. Then I wrote a rough draft, brainstorming about writers that reflect the contents of the poem before I start the revising process; but since I was running on so little time, I just ended up mostly using that rough draft as the final pro...

Write about a moment when you had to step out of your comfort zone.

hi :)   Prompt   Response There are lots of times when we have to step out of our comfort zone, it's just a part of life. I'd have to say one time I had to step out of my comfort zone was applying for this really sought-after weeklong music production session. Tens of thousands of people competing for a slot in the selected 35 participants. I wasn't actually going to apply for this opportunity, until I decided to step out of my comfort zone about preserving my music and sent off a small collection. I wasn't really expecting a response, until a few days later, surprisingly, I was chosen. It was such an incredible experience working with tons of A-list artists in the music industry, it was genuinely so exciting, and all because I decided to do something I wasn't confident in. Today, we learned about the two types of characterization: direct and indirect characterization. We then applied what we learned by analyzing characters from James Baldwin’s “The Rockpile” using the STEAL method: Speech, Thoughts, Effect on Others, Actions, and Looks. Now, apply characterization to yourself. If someone were using the STEAL method to characterize you, how would they describe you? Lots of people tell me that my speech patterns really depend on who I'm talking to, which I guess gives me the impression that I adapt who I am to the people I'm around, making me less authentic. But, I'd say that's far from the truth, because my journey is to fight for one's authenticity. In "The Rockpile", John and Roy do not always receive the same treatment from the adults in their family. Have you ever felt that you or someone else in your family was treated differently from everyone else? What caused the difference, and do you think it was fair? Explain.

  ooh this is a hard one to write Prompt   Response Wow, this prompt hits straight in the gut because I feel as if my family was built on the differences between me and my brother. I won't go too in depth but the overall sentiment was that, because my brother was this troublemaker who was always involved in something, I was never given much thought about my life and who I am, and because I seemed like a stable, happy kid, there was never really a need to check on me. Was it fair? Probably not. I definitely felt like it wasn't very fair, but it did really shape who I am now so I felt as if it was an unfortunate tradeoff that did pay off in the end. In “The Rockpile,” the children know that the rockpile is dangerous and that they are supposed to stay away from it, but curiosity still draws them toward it. Think about a time when curiosity or temptation caused you to ignore a warning or rule. What happened, and what did you learn from the experience?

hii :) Prompt   Response I can't really remember a time where I let curiosity driving me to willingly disobey a rule put on me, but I think the closest thing to that would be that feeling of lonliness that drives you to commit to a relationship when you know you aren't ready. I definitely experienced that one before. Not to get very specific but I really liked someone a few years ago, I wanted to do everything for them because I believed if I wasn't "fully committed" in my eyes, then they would drift apart like every else before them. But, I felt as if I did too much and I eventually led them on, they became very interested in me, and then once the loneliness waned away with the relationship we had, I started to realize that I didn't want this. I didn't want them anymore. I only wanted them because I was too alone, not because I had a genuine connection with them. In “Because I could not stop for Death,” Emily Dickinson presents life as a journey that eventually comes to an end. What experiences in your life have reminded you that time moves quickly? How have those experiences affected the way you value your time?

  WE love dickinson freak ym vro Prompt   Reponse I think one time I felt like I was reminded of the brevity of life was when I was writing one of my poems titled "space-time." The opening lines that I wrote are such: "Space tells you time is relative. If so, my life ends with time. All of the rest of time happens when I die." During the time of writing this poem, I was looking at how my life events move behind me like so fluidly. How it feels to remember on thoughts can seem so close but far away. It feels like time is relative to your human experience, and how I believe that these memories and the rest of the time that happens in the future pass when you're gone. It was a strong realization. I don't know what it's like to be nonexistent, but I'd assume it would feel the same as the timelessness of being not born.   yo hi :) Prompt   Reponse I sat in on a session one day with Atlanta-based interdisciplinary rapper-producer Dizzy Wright and a couple other award-winning musicians and music workers about a year back, and I gotta say, that's a time when I felt like I truly belonged. I felt like I was understood and my passions and drive weren't just seen as a hobby. They were seen as a legitimate repertoire of my abilities and what I was capable of. Dizzy told me how much I reminded him of himself during his early years. Having that drive to create despite practically everyone telling me to quit and to do something productive. We had a long conversation about philosophy and the mind of an artist. It felt like I was truly understood for who I was, not who people saw me as. It makes sense, he lived through the same struggles every artist faces when they are passionate about their craft.
